There are normally at least 4 elevations included, one for each side of the house. At least to the point where you are able to converse with your contractor about them.. Understanding what your plans are trying to tell you, is going to require an understanding of what these symbols represent. Scaling is the term used for this "reduction". 

An elevation illustrates your home as if you were looking directly at it. The most common ones are the floor plans and the elevation. What this means, is every 1/4" on your plans really means 1 foot in real size.Elevation plans are the next most common. Every component in your home ranging from doors and windows to HVAC and plumbing will have a different symbol. It is also a map of where everything is going to go.The floor plans show a top down look at your home.1/4" scale is the most common size. Your plans illustrate your home, but they are not drawn to the same size. But take them one at a time and imagine them as a map. They look like you are looking at your house from up above.In addition, your set of plans will include details, HVAC, electrical and plumbing diagrams.Learning the symbols will take you a long way towards understanding and communicating what is on the prints. It lays out a map of how your home is going to look. Generally, these plans illustrate what your home would look like if you looked straight down on it, and the top of the room was cut off at a height of 4 feet. 

Which, is why they can seem so overwhelming at first. Your architect and contractor are there to help.Basically, your home plans are like a map.
